Sushi Information

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

What is Sushi?

Origin and ingredients

Sushi is typical Japanese food, which has been popular in the West for a number of years. There are also many sushi restaurants in Europe and the US. Sushi is a dish that is available in many types and sizes. Sushi always consists of rice (shari) and another ingredient (neta). Often that other ingredient is fish, but sushi is also made with, for example, vegetables, meat, poultry or egg. Many sushi also contain dried seaweed (nori). This is often used to keep the rice and the other ingredient together.

The rice is cooked with rice vinegar, which gives it a typical flavor. The fish in sushi is usually eaten raw, but very occasionally sushi is also made with cooked fish. In principle, no spices are added to sushi. However, ingredients such as sesame seeds, spring onion and calves are added for the taste and decoration. Usually sashimi is also served in sushi restaurants. This is sometimes confused with sushi, but is officially not called sushi. Sashimi consists of slices of raw fish without any addition, so no rice.

Flavor enhancers

Before you eat the sushi, you can dip it in soy sauce. Soy sauce is salty and enhances the sometimes somewhat dull taste of the rice and raw fish. Sushi is always served with sushi. This is made from horseradish and is green. It has a sharp, spicy taste, so a careful dosage is desirable! Wasabi can be mixed by the soy sauce before the sushi is dipped. Finally, a dish with gari is always on the table in a sushi restaurant. This is pickled ginger, which tastes slightly acidic and a bit spicy. It is a refreshing change between the different sushi’s, in order to be able to taste the following sushi again.

Maki sushi

Maki sushi is made by placing a layer of cooked sushi rice on a sheet of dried seaweed. On top of that, the other ingredient is laid, such as raw fish or cucumber. The whole is rolled up firmly with the help of a bamboo mat. With a little moisture, for example some water, the seaweed can be glued to itself. The long roll is cut into pieces of two to three centimeters and presented upright on a plate so that the diameter of the sushi is visible. The art of making maki-sushi is to get the filling exactly in the middle of the rice. The form described here is the best known maki form, but again there are many subdivisions and different forms, such as temaki sushi. This is a slightly smaller so-called ‘handroll’ that is eaten in its entirety.

Nigiri sushi

Usually no seaweed is used for this type of sushi. It consists of rice that is formed in a rectangular bite, on which a slice of raw fish is located. Poultry or omelet is also used to add to this form of sushi. If the nigiri sushi is made with omelet, there is often a strip of seaweed around it.
